Movies I Want To See:

Jess + Moss

This film has appealed to me ever since I saw the trailer. I am especially interested in this movie because of how close to where I grew up it was filmed. Jess + Moss was filmed in Western Kentucky, which is very close to my Tennessee home that I have grow to love.

Based on the descriptions from movie sites like IMDB and Mubi, Jess + Moss’s storyline sounds very intriguing, which makes me feel this film has great potential and will definitely be one I’ll be seeing as soon as I can.

Submarine

I had wanted to see this film for quite some time after seeing an advertisement for it when I was in London this summer, but missed it when it came to cinemas here.  So when I saw Submarine sitting there on the DVD shelf at Best Buy, I had to buy it.

I found Submarine to be beautifully made.  The vignettes, the fireworks, and the sublime landscapes of Wales all added so much to the film.  Along with the cinematography and all, I thought the story, screenwriting, and overall tone of the film were fantastic.  I became completely absorbed in the story, and by the end found myself pleading for Jordana to get back together with Oliver Tate.  

As for the cast, they were great.  Craig Roberts and Yasmin Paige were marvelous together, and I thoroughly enjoyed Noah Taylor’s bearded performance.  I do not think the film could have been cast any better.

Submarine was truly interesting, gripping, charming, heartwarming, heartbreaking, and then heartwarming again, a great piece of British cinema in my opinion.  I would highly recommend you go see this movie, especially if you’re a fan of quirky love stories.

Little Miss Sunshine

It had been a few years since I watched Little Miss Sunshine, but I decided to watch it once more recently. To me, this film is charming, funny, interesting, and an all around good time. There is something missing for me though, I’m not sure what it is, but there is something about the film that keeps it from being in my non tangible list of favorite movies. I mean, the cast is great, I like the story, and it is very well written, but it just wasn’t one of those films where I feel compelled to sit there in my seat until the credits are over and contemplate the magnificent (in my opinion) piece of cinema I just experienced. 

Even though Little Miss Sunshine is not a favorite of mine, I still enjoy it very much, and would recommend you go see it. Once again, I’ll leave you with a quote from the film, one that I strongly agree with.

“You do what you love, and fuck the rest.”

The Last Mountain

It had been quite a while since I had seen a documentary, so I went to go see The Last Mountain, because of how close to home the problem focused on in the film is for me. Now, I’m no expert on documentaries, but I would say The Last Mountain was done tremendously well and was extremely informative. I honestly did not know how big the mountain top mining problem was here.

I don’t really know what else to say about this film besides it is great, go see it, especially if you live in the South.

I saw The Tree of Life for my second time last night, and I really want to go for a third. There are just so many things in this film that send shivers down my spine, that resonate with me more than any other film ever has.

To me, The Tree of Life is quite possibly one of the greatest works of art I have ever seen in my lifetime.

Captain America: The First Avenger

In an attempt to give Marvel another chance after Iron Man 2 and Thor, which I did not enjoy, I went to go see Captain America. To my surprise, I actually enjoyed it. Some of the acting was kinda off in my opinion, but I enjoyed it. 

I really don’t have that much else to say about this film. I loved the time period it was set in, the action scenes were pretty cool, and Captain America’s shield is badass.

If you only see one superhero movie this year, make it this one.

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

Oh man, well, I was not going to see this film, but I was eventually convinced by some friends of mine who kept telling me it was “amazing”, “awesome”, and “the best movie of the year”. The best movie of the year? No way in hell was that the best movie of the year. I came into the theater with low expectations, and left with those expectations smashed by the mediocrity of this film. I mean, yeah, there were a few cheap laughs, but it seemed like three fourths of the film were just slow motion action scenes, which I admit some were kinda cool. Sadly, that and the attractiveness of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley were the only things in the film that really entertained me.

The climax dragged on forever, the plot was not very interesting, overall this was just an unneeded sequel in my opinion. I personally would not recommend this film, but that is just because I did not like it. Obviously there are people who really enjoyed this film, but I was not one of them.

Movies I Want To See:

Scenes from the Suburbs

I do not really know a whole lot about this short film, but from what I do know, it is very appealing to me. First of all, I adore Arcade Fire. I have been a hardcore fan of their’s since their first album. Secondly, it is written and directed by Spike Jonze, who’s work I have quite enjoyed over the years.

Seeing as not only Spike Jonze, but also Win and Will Butler (members of Arcade Fire), wrote this short. I can only imagine it being great.

Mary and Max

Mary and Max is one of my personal favorites. I watched it for my 3rd time last night, and it still has the same affect on me. The contrasting tones of the two settings create a perfect mood for this film. Mary and Max is a heartwarming, depressing, and funny stop-motion film by Oscar winning director Adam Elliot about two people from completely different sides of the world, who themselves are not really all that different. The two become pen pals and from that spawns a lifelong friendship between the two.

To me, this film is one to watch over and over again. It is well written, well directed, well voice acted, and has great animation. Animated films to some may seem juvenile, but Mary and Max is far from it. It is a grown up film, containing things such as suicide, mental illness, addiction, and death. It’s not all death and sadness though, there is also love, friendship, and humor.

I would highly recommend anyone and everyone to see this film. I’ve found the DVD at Best Buy and it is also on the Netflix Instant Queue if you would like to watch it.
